Jazz in Short
Measures - Lewis Rosengarten
With a doctorate in music, teaching experience, and a composer himself, Dr. Rosengarten of SUNY Cortland is qualified to write a short textbook about jazz. This is book is supposed to be used as a supplementary text in a course about jazz. In ten short chapters, he provides in chronological orders the history of jazz styles, stars, and achievements. Naturally, some stars have to be omitted or minimized in such as overview – so there is very little about figures such as Chick Webb and Fats Waller and girl singers. Plus, the text has many typing and editing goofs, such as Billy for Billie or references to pictures that are not in the book. Still, for readers who are looking for a bird’s eye view, this book will fit the bill.
